  16.      The STS-41 crew continues to direct its attention to
  17. secondary science and operational investigations during the
  18. mission's third flight day.
  19.  
  20.      STS-41 crew members completed a waste water dump on
  21. orbit 33 over the southeastern U.S. as part of detailed test
  22. objective (DTO) 330 about 7:02 a.m. CDT or a MET of 2/00:18. The 
  23. DTO is designed to give investigators a clear definition of the 
  24. water's plume with respect to the orbiter.  Interest in 
  25. documenting this event resulted after STS-61A when water from an 
  26. orbiter waste/supply water dump recontacted the orbiter.

  28.      STS-41 Mission Specialists Bill Shepherd and Bruce Melnick 
  29. worked with the Voice Command System (VCS) this morning. This was 
  30. the second of three sessions in which Shepherd and Melnick are 
  31. testing a device designed to allow voice control of the orbiter's 
  32. television cameras. The system failed to recognize nine words in 
  33. its 31  word vocabulary during Shepherd's session.  Melnick 
  34. reported better success, having difficulty with only two words.

  36.    The VCS works on personalized "templates" to identify the 
  37. user. The templates are computer chips that recognize the human 
  38. voice and make "imprints" of words, which it stores as commands. 
  39. Investigators had speculated the system might encounter some 
  40. difficulty in identifying Shepherd and Melnick's voices because 
  41. microgravity can change voice characteristics. The crew's final 
  42. session with the VCS is scheduled for about 6:30 a.m. tomorrow or 
  43. a MET 3/00:30.

  45.      Later today crew members will work with the Shuttle Solar 
  46. Backscatter Ultraviolet (SSBUV) experiment, Chromosome and Plant 
  47. Cell Division (CHROMEX-2) and DTO 1206 the Cursor Control Device.
